Daemon Targaryen vs Aemond Targaryen

The victimAemond TargaryenWesteros · rank 14

Eleven ranks apart and the record agrees with the ladder, which ought to make this the dullest pairing on the page. It is the most interesting, because of what the agreement is made of. The killing itself is a compiler's reconstruction of a leap between two falling dragons, and the loser's standing is a chronicler's word that Criston Cole taught him well. What the chronicles cannot supply the screen does, on both sides of the pairing: S01E01 films Cole beating Daemon twice in an afternoon, and S01E08 films Aemond beating Cole in the yard. The only hard object in the exchange itself is a skeleton raised from a lake with Dark Sister through the socket, which settles the outcome and nothing about the skill.

The connecting record

statedFire & Blood

Daemon Targaryen killed Aemond Targaryen in Fire & Blood.

Left Caraxes's saddle in mid-air while the two dragons were locked together and drove Dark Sister into the emptied socket until the hilt stopped it. The armoured bones came up out of the lake years later, still chained, with the blade where he had put it.

the Rogue Prince

The novelsHouse of the Dragonnoveltelevisioncontested

Leapt out of the saddle in mid-air, landed on the larger dragon, and put Dark Sister hilt-deep through his nephew's blind eye, both beasts going into the Gods Eye and one of them crawling ashore to die. He is placed under men with far less in their hands because of what that account is. Fire & Blood is a maester's compilation of chroniclers who disagree with each other, the Gods Eye has not been filmed, and the Dance reaches its compiler through a fool, a septon and a grand maester who contradict one another on his own pages. The screen gives smaller and more useful things: a false surrender on a Stepstones beach that put three arrows in him and needed Laenor Velaryon and a dragon to finish, and two defeats in one afternoon at the hands of Criston Cole. Book and series both give Cole a tilt and a bout where his morningstar beats Dark Sister; they disagree about the order and not the kind.

Aemond One-Eye

The novelsHouse of the Dragonnoveltelevisioncontested

Climbed onto the largest living dragon at ten years old, at night, without permission, and paid an eye for it on the walk back — a trade he said afterwards he would make again. Criston Cole made a swordsman of him, and every source Gyldayn compiled agrees he was a dangerous one, which is the trouble: agreement is not a bout, and nobody ever set a bout of his down. What got written was the dragon's work. The series films two fights of his own and neither is a duel: a brawl among children on a Driftmark beach, where he breaks a boy's nose, throws all four of them off him at once, and still finishes on the sand screaming with a dagger opening his face; and the retaking of Harrenhal in the third season, where he goes through the survivors with Blackfyre and kills Ser Simon Strong and both his sons, the last of whom wounds him badly in the back on the way down. His last recorded act is fastening his saddle chains properly, and the man who left his own dangling crossed the gap between two falling dragons and put a sword through the socket Lucerys Velaryon had emptied.

Aemond Targaryen on the Westeros ladder

What this does not settle

One death in one work. It is the only place the record puts these two in the same room, and it is evidence about that meeting and nothing wider — not a general matchup, not a rematch, and not a ranking of its own.

The ladder above it is argued from everything either of them has been shown doing; this page is argued from one citation.

Where the two disagree, the disagreement is the point, and it stays visible rather than being resolved by whichever of them happens to be on this page.
