The Wight Host vs Jorah Mormont

The killerThe Wight HostWesteros · rank 7
13 places
The victimJorah MormontWesteros · rank 20

Thirteen places and the record agrees, but the man who dies here is not the man the rank was taken from. Jorah's number comes from one season — a breach at Pyke, a final tilt held level with Jaime — and this death arrives years later, in the exile's body, guarding the queen he had come to serve. The host did not beat that champion; it outlasted what remained of him, which is the only thing it ever does. So the pairing confirms the order without testing it, because a quantity that cannot be subtracted from wins any fight that goes on long enough.

the army of the dead

The novelsGame of Thronesnoveltelevisioncontested

Counts its dead as reinforcements, which is an arithmetic nothing else on this ladder has. Injury does not reduce it either. Alliser Thorne carries a severed hand south in a jar and swears the fingers were still working when he left the Wall; a direwolf under the hill gnaws at a loose arm and it goes on clutching until the bone cracks; a captured one comes out of its crate at the queen across the floor of the Dragonpit and is stopped by the chain on its neck, and when Sandor Clegane cuts it in half the top of it comes back at him over the flagstones on its hands. The novels supply specimens one at a time — Waymar Royce getting up in the snow in the prologue of the first book, Othor walking into the Lord Commander's chamber with black hands, Small Paul shattering a dragonglass dagger on his own mail. The force is the television series': the Hardhome shore emptied and re-crewed in a single gesture, and a burning trench at Winterfell put out by feeding bodies into it until the rest could walk over. Slow, stupid, and it takes fire like an oiled rag, which is why a tier of swordsmen sits above it.

Jorah the Andal

The novelsGame of Thronesnoveltelevision

The champion's laurel from Lannisport is the only thing holding this rank up, and the man who reports it is Jorah Mormont, once, at night, in a dead city, to a girl he is in love with. He went through the breach at Pyke behind Thoros of Myr and was knighted for it; at the tourney that celebrated the victory he wore a Hightower girl's favour, beat every challenger set in front of him and held Jaime Lannister to a draw in the final tilt. Then he entered tourney after tourney to pay for the wife he had won with that one and never came near it again, each defeat costing a suit of armour and a charger, until the debts turned him into a slaver and Eddard Stark's sentence turned him into an exile. The one fight a reader actually watches him win happens after the fall, and it is Qotho, killed at the price of an arakh in the hip. The rest of the late record is the screen's: Stone Men beaten off a boat in Old Valyria with greyscale as the fare, which the novels give to Jon Connington rescuing Tyrion in the Sorrows, and a melee in a fighting pit he wins standing only because a stranger put a blade through the water dancer who had him on the sand, where the novels leave him caged as Yezzan's property until he signs with the Second Sons.

  • statedA Clash of Kings · ch. 12 (Daenerys I)

Entered tourney after tourney afterwards to pay for his wife's tastes and never distinguished himself again, each loss costing him a suit of armour and a charger.

Jorah Mormont on the Westeros ladder

What this does not settle

One death in one work. It is the only place the record puts these two in the same room, and it is evidence about that meeting and nothing wider — not a general matchup, not a rematch, and not a ranking of its own.

The ladder above it is argued from everything either of them has been shown doing; this page is argued from one citation.

Where the two disagree, the disagreement is the point, and it stays visible rather than being resolved by whichever of them happens to be on this page.
